Easy Hot Cross Buns Recipe

Traditionally eaten at Easter, Hot Cross Buns are sweetly spiced and packed full of dried fruit. They are great toasted and covered with butter! We've put together an easy recipe to get you started making these delicious bread treats.

Hot Cross Buns in a pan

Ingredients: 500g strong white flour, 80g golden caster sugar, 2tsp cinnamon, 1tsp nutmeg, 10g dried yeast, 40g butter, 250ml semi skimmed milk, 1 egg, 250g mixed dried fruit , 80g plain flour

Prep: 3 hours (including 2 1/2 hours proving)

Cook: 20 minutes

Makes: 12 hot cross buns 

Mix the flour, caster sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and dried yeast in a bowl. Melt the butter and milk over a medium heat. Once melted add to the flour mixture then add the beaten egg. 

Mix together to bring the mixture to form a dough, add more milk if required. Tip onto a floured work surface and knead for 10 minutes. Place the dough into a bowl, cover with cling film and leave in a warm place for 1 1/2 hours until doubled in size.

Hot cross buns and cup of tea

When doubled in size, tip onto a lightly floured surface and shape into 12 buns. Place them onto a lightly greased and floured baking tin or baking tray spaced close together. Cover with cling film and leave for a further hour until the buns double in size. 

Mix the plain flour with 100ml water and mix together to create a paste, mix well to enough mixture is smooth with no lumps.

When the buns have risen, pipe the flour mixture across the buns. Place in an oven preheated to 200 degrees for about 20 minutes until the buns are golden brown.
